One of the possible reasons for a slow Mac is the accumulation of browser or app extensions that you might have installed without realizing their impact on your system performance. In this article, we will explore the impact of extensions on Mac performance and offer practical tips to speed up your computer.

The impact of extensions on Mac Performance

Extensions, whether browser-based or application-specific, can consume valuable system resources, leading to a noticeable slowdown in performance. Here are some ways extensions can influence your Mac’s overall speed:

  • Extensions often run in the background, utilizing CPU and memory resources. The more extensions you have installed on your Mac, the more system resources they collectively consume. This can result in slower response times for applications and increased load times for web pages.
  • Browser extensions, in particular, can significantly impact your browsing experience. Each extension adds to the browser’s memory footprint and can cause increased page loading times. Furthermore, incompatible or outdated extensions may lead to crashes and instability.
  • Some extensions are designed to launch automatically when your Mac starts up. While these extensions may provide convenience, they also contribute to longer startup times. Having numerous extensions launching at startup can cause delays in getting your Mac up and running.

Tips to speed up your Mac

Now that we understand how extensions can influence Mac performance, let’s explore some effective tips to optimize your system and restore its speed:

  1. Remove unnecessary extensions.

You should regularly assess the extensions installed on your browsers and applications. Remove any extensions that you no longer use or that do not significantly contribute to your workflow.

  1. Update extensions and software.

Keep your extensions and applications up to date. Developers frequently release updates to address performance issues and improve compatibility. Ensure that the extensions you use are compatible with the latest version of your operating system and software.

  1. Disable or limit background processes

Some extensions run background processes even when not actively in use. Disable or limit background processes for extensions that are not essential to your daily tasks. Check your browser settings for options to prevent extensions from running background processes.

  1. Use Safari’s Extension Manager

If you’re a Safari user, use its built-in Extension Manager to review and manage installed extensions easily. Open Safari Settings and go to the Extensions tab. Here you can disable or remove unnecessary extensions.

  1. Monitor System Activity

Use the Activity Monitor application to identify resource-intensive processes and extensions. Keep an eye on CPU and memory usage, and take appropriate action if you notice any extensions consuming an excessive amount of resources.

  1. Optimize Startup Items

Review the list of items that launch at startup. Go to System Settings → General →  Login Items. Remove unnecessary startup items, especially extensions that may not be critical for immediate use.

  1. Use MacCleaner Pro

Instead of taking the previous six steps, you can use one tool that will help you take control of all your extensions and speed up your Mac. Simply download and run MacCleaner Pro → select options in the Speed Up section and click to perform them.

Conclusion

Extensions can significantly enhance the functionality of your Mac, but they also have the potential to impact performance negatively. By following the tips outlined in this article, you can effectively manage and optimize your Mac, ensuring a smoother and more responsive user experience. Regularly reviewing and maintaining your extensions, keeping software up to date, and monitoring system activity are essential practices to keep your Mac running at its best.

Extensions come in many forms. The Google Web Store has thousands, if not tens of thousands, of different extensions that improve the browser experience in various ways. Users can install a program to compare prices in online stores, quickly communicate in social networks, take screenshots, improve their own performance, activate page reading mode, and so on. To imagine a modern browser without extensions is extremely difficult. Let’s consider the top extensions that are mandatory for most users.

Ad Blocker

Ad blocker will get rid of annoying banners that pop up when loading the page. This applies not only to images, but also to videos and flashing banners that are displayed in a separate window.

Thanks to the blocker, you will not only protect yourself from annoying offers, but also significantly speed up your work on the Internet. Advertisements can be voluminous, videos weigh dozens of megabytes, which means that the loading of pages slows down. In addition, many modern blockers are able to stop not only advertising banners, but also various cookies, trackers and other data fragments that track your activity.

Security

Internet security most often lies in the area of limiting the tracking of your activity. We have already touched on this point above – cookies, trackers, java scripts. We will not go into details, but simply say that these are special pieces of data that remember your stay on a particular site and even read your interests.

Privacy Badger

This is an extension that prevents advertisers and other third-party trackers from secretly tracking where you go and what pages you view online.

Click&Clean

With this program, you can clean up your entire browser history. No one will know what sites you’ve visited, what you’ve searched for, what you’ve looked at, and so on.

Avast Online Security

An extension that checks if a site is real or if you’ve been led to a fake or virus-infected page. A must for installing on “grandma’s PC”!

HTTPS Everywhere

Developers are independently trying to secure your online experience. Gradually they are transferring pages to a new protocol – https. This extension will make sure that you will always see the https-version of the site, and thus increase your security.

Password Manager

Let’s face it: your password gfhjkm or qwerty1234 is unlikely to protect you from hacking. Today, any novice hacker can pick up even complex letter combinations in a couple of hours. That’s why every site actively asks you to use lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers and many different symbols. To avoid memorizing a password in the style of “”kmljhflj_kexit_dct[“, you need to install a password manager extension.

The main purpose of extensions is clear from the name itself – to extend the functionality of the browser. A plugin can be used to embed its elements into any cloud service for the purpose of integration, additional features for SaaS, creation of a microservice, or simply as an additional tool.

Depending on the purpose for which the extension is created, the following types of extensions can be distinguished:

Integration extensions

Cloud software for CRMokok, warehouse management programs and many other business systems are becoming more and more popular, and no cloud provider does not give you the opportunity to build into it, and adjust it to yourself. In this case, an extension is a cool opportunity to take a well-designed cloud service, and build one or more of your own buttons into it. You can assign it a data export function, and set up the process of data exchange between different back-end systems. This way you can get custom functionality for someone else’s cloud software.

Microservices

These are micro-applications that are called “on the button” and interact with the page. You need them for services that make sense to run in the environment of another site/application. It is able to read information from the site on which it was invoked, and thus greatly simplify user interaction. It can be any services of notes, screenshots or videos, they can not just save data, but immediately upload it to the cloud, or send it, for example, by mail.

Tools for developers

Calling tools without closing the browser is a very convenient feature for developers. There are a large number of such extensions, but we’ll talk about that another time.

Extensions (plugins) act as special add-ons to programs, increasing and improving their standard functionality. The main condition is that they must be installed from official stores to avoid security problems. Such sources are available in every browser (which we will consider next). The key feature of any extension is that it does not act as a separate application, but exactly as an addition to the main software.

Plugins provide users with the ability to:

  • download audio and video files where it is not possible to do it using the usual method;
  • block advertising messages in the web browser;
  • quickly find out the weather forecast;
  • bypass blocking of Internet resources;
  • read the news;
  • easily manage file downloads
  • change the appearance of the browser window;
  • quickly translate from one language to another, etc.

Some plug-ins are installed as a separate icon on the toolbar, others look like additional buttons on those sites for which they were written. It is best to use universal extensions, as they allow you to work on any Internet portals.

Advantages of extensions:

  • Quick access, convenience and clarity of use;
  • Cross-platform – ability to work on any platform where there is a browser;
  • Ability to integrate non-integrated, to insert your functionality into third-party products that have no access to the core;
  • Ability to combine your systems and cloud services into a comprehensive enterprise systems landscape.

Disadvantages of browser extensions:

  • The need to periodically update the extension to match browser or service updates;
  • You need to write a separate version of the extension for each browser.

The use of extensions is a frequent phenomenon in the west, and is becoming increasingly popular in ours. Indeed, with their simplicity and functionality, they deserve special attention. If you have such an idea, and you don’t know how to realize it – write to us, we can create an extension of any complexity.
